Reading for Rescues

Research shows reading can have a calming effect on animals. Rescue for Readers is a program designed to help our shelter dogs become more adoptable. Reading to the dogs helps to bring comfort to and reduce the anxiety of shelter pets, and it nurtures empathy in children. Participants sit outside the dog’s kennel and read to them.

We welcome any age, from 5 to 105, to come and read to our shelter dogs. Just hearing the sound of your voice offers comfort to our homeless pups. We hope that their socialization with the public will improve their chances for adoption.

Our dogs are good listeners, so children will get to work on their reading skills without any peer pressure. It’s also a great bonding experience for the parent and child. For adult readers, it’s a perfect stress reliever and a great excuseto get out of the house and make a new friend!

We have lots of books with different reading levels for you to choose from. You can always bring your own book, too!
